Five Types of Affective Contexts: Nonmonotonic NPI Licensers

چکیده

1. Introduction In this paper, I show that there exist five-not only three-types of affective contexts which license negative polarity items (NPIs). There are two classes of nonmonotonic NPI licensers – stable and unstable-in addition to three kinds of downward entailing (DE) licensers that Zwarts (1993,1998) points out. The existence of covert 'only' is the key to NPI licensing by the unstable class. Moreover, nonreferentiality is requisite for NPI licensing by this class. The fact that there is no nonmonotonic NPI licensing in Japanese gives evidence that nonmonotonic classes form the weakest NPI licensers. Furthermore, I suggest that the quantified structured meaning is the semantics of the whole range of NPI licensers in both DE and nonmonotonic environment.

Non-monotonic Negativity

The main aim of this paper is to provide a new analysis of licensers of negative polarity items (NPIs). The problems with Fauconnier-Ladusaw's downward entailment analysis have been argued since Linebarger (1980). I will show that there exists a class of weak NPI licensers characterized by non-monotonicity and exclusivity. Weak negation, which is monotone decreasing, has been known to license w...

Japanese Negative Polarity Items and Negative Concord

Negative polarity items (NPIs) are a class of expressions whose distribution is restricted to affective contexts, especially to the negative context (Kato (1985)). Examples of the expressions traditionally counted as Japanese negative polarity items are: kessite ('ever'), nannimo ('anything'), daremo (`anyone'), dokomo (`anywhere'), tittomo (`not at all'), and sika ('only') (Ikeya and Kawamori ...

6 The role of contrast - specific and language - specific phonetics in contour tone distribution

In some tone languages, contour tones (pitch changes within a syllable) may be used contrastively. The phonological distribution of contour tones has been of much theoretical interest, as it sheds light on both the representation of tone (Woo 1969; Leben 1973; Goldsmith 1976; Bao 1990; Duanmu 1990, 1994a; Yip 1989, 1995) and the relation between phonetics and phonology (Duanmu 1994b; Gordon 199...

Reliability assessment of Needle Penetration Index for estimating compressive strength of some sedimentary rocks from the Qom Formation, Central Iran

In this paper, the needle penetrometer test was utilized to explore the reliability of the Needle Penetration Index (NPI) for estimating the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of sedimentary rocks including gypsum, marl, siltstone and sandstone collected from the Qom Formation. Following the UCS and NP test, regression analyses were carried out to control the predictive performances of NPI. ...
